Home Vineyard Shiraz 2014 – 12 bottle case

MUSEUM RELEASE.

Those people who have been following Mistletoe for some time will recall us mentioning in our newsletters that we are continually working at improving the quality of the grapes we grow at Mistletoe.

To that end, our Home Vineyard has seen an enormous amount of time and money spent on it over the last 10 years.

The Shiraz at Mistletoe was planted in 1991 so it is now well over 25 years of age and consistently producing very high quality grapes.

The Shiraz vines at Mistletoe were grown from cuttings supplied from the old Shiraz blocks at Tyrrells so they can trace their source all the way back to Montpellier in France where the material was originally acquired around the year 1831 and brought to Australia and the Hunter Valley by James Busby*.

* “The man who could sit under the shade of his own vine, with his wife and children about him, and the ripe clusters hanging within their reach, in such a climate as this, and not feel the highest enjoyment, is incapable of happiness and does not know what the word means”, wrote Busby of his 19th century notions of grape growing in the Hunter Valley.

Busby planted vines at Kirkton – near Branxton – with cuttings he’d made from vineyards in France and Spain when he travelled there in 1831.

We re-trellised the Mistletoe Home Vineyard Shiraz block a few years ago moving to a higher trellis system to allow more air and sunlight to get to the fruit.

This method has been very beneficial as it makes the fruit less prone to disease because of better ventilation through the foliage and fruit. This trellising system also assists in getting the grapes riper more evenly and earlier by allowing more sunlight into the canopy of the vines.

2014 was an excellent vintage with old timers suggesting it is the best vintage since 1956 or 1965.

Now,some four years after bottling their brilliance is starting to shine through

This is a fuller bodied Hunter Shiraz, but, still elegant and balanced.

It shows very supple tannins combining with delicate bright fruit flavours which perfectly match the tannin structure and lead to a long gentle finish.

Classic Hunter style again!

Drink now to 2040.
